Global Security Flashcards
What is supply chain security?
Managing the risk associated with movement or transport of goods and services. This could be in the form of physical or cyber security.
Supply chain security includes preventing:
Theft
Sabotage
Terrorism
Cyber attacks
What is biosecurity?
This involves reducing disease outbreaks, controlling the import and export of animals and sharing knowledge on farming practices.
What is environmental security?
Globalisation has allowed us to promote awareness and improved technology allows greater
environmental monitoring. However, many global activities are polluting land, air and sea.
When and where was Huawei founded?
Founded in a small apartment in Shenzhen, China, 1987
How many countries and regions do Huawei operate in?
Over 170
How many people do Huawei serve globally?
3 billion
Fact about Huawei’s global market share:
Huawei secured over 10% of the global market share in 2017
What is a back door?
An undocumented way of gaining access to a computer system, allowing
companies to obtain information.
What is cyber security?
Protecting computer systems from unauthorised access, or being otherwise damaged or made inaccessible
What is virtualisation?
Hardware-based network functions replaced with software-based ones, to optimise the network for efficiency, flexibility, and capacity
The concerns of Huawei?
Chinese govt using Huawei for intelligence purposes
Huawei having control over networks in ways we can’t predict, creating vulnerability for countries using Huawei’s equipment
Virtualisation increases the risk of cyberattacks, as there is a global increase in use of software
Should we give Huawei/China this much political and economical leverage? Is Huawei a pawn of the
Chinese government?
The Law in China causing concerns:
National Intelligence Law: if asked, citizens and companies must provide information to the authorities
Benefits/arguments for Huawei and the 5G Network:
5G provides a boost to the economy, since better technology encourages investment.
GCHQ stated that the “threat of spying [via Huawei] is overrated”.
How could backdoors and 5G effect a country?
Back doors and future over-reliance on the 5G network could leave a country vulnerable to cyber attacks, compromising entire systems: disrupting communications, preventing operation of traffic lights, effecting public transport
