Coasts Flashcards
Formation of Rias
Rising sea levels flood narrow, winding inlets and river valleys. Deeper at mouth of inlet, with water depth decreasing further inland.
Eg New York Harbour
Formation of fjords
Rising sea levels flood glacial valleys to create natural inlets and harbours. Deeper in the middle section than at the mouth, with the shallower section identifying where the glacier left the valley.
Formation of Dalmatian Coasts
Valleys running parallel to the coast become flooded as a result of sea level change, leaving a series of narrow, long and rugged islands
How are submergent landforms formed and give examples of landforms
Eustatic rise or isostatic fall
Examples: Rias, fjords, Dalmatian Coast
How are emergent landforms formed and give examples of landforms
Emergent landforms were produced towards the end of an ice age when isostatic rebound occurred faster than the eustatic rise in sea level.
Examples: raised beaches and relic cliffs
Sources of energy in coastal environments
Wind (fetch effects wave magnitude and energy; prevailing wind direction; agent of erosion)
Waves (including wave refraction)
Tidal/Storm Surges
Currents
