A
- 1648
- was seen as the beginning of international politics. It established three key principles:
- Sovereignty of states
- Legal equality between states
- Non-intervention between states

a community of people who share characteristics and values. It may not be recognized by other nations or states.

- Usually, a state is declared when members of the United Nations do so, and new states seek membership of the UN. This theory of statehood was established in the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. Current partially recognised states include Kosovo and South Osse
