Global Networks Flashcards
Define space time compression
Solution to distance decay because technology (internet, cell phones) is allowing us to communicate more across longer distance, therefore bringing people closer together although the distance remains the same.
What are hubs?
Switched on world cities or global regions in economic core areas and of great wealth. Well connected to other hubs and act as regional nodes as connected to other global economic cores/technopole/source of trickle down/source of multiplier effect & cumulative causation
What 4 locations did the Indian Golden Quadrilateral connect?
Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta & Chennai
How were the places connected?
5,846 km of four to six lane highways
How much did the project cost?
$8.9 bil.
When did it start and finish?
It launched in 2001 and was completed in 2012.
What are the benefits of the project?
Establishing faster transport network between ports and cities.
Enabling industrial and job development in smaller towns through access to markets.
Providing an impetus to smoother movement of products and people within India.
Providing opportunities for farmers, through better transportation of produce from the agricultural hinterland to major cities and ports for export, through lesser wastage and spoils.
Driving economic growth directly, through construction as well as through indirect demand for cement, steel and other construction materials.
What helps space time compression and how?
Air travel - cheaper travel for masses, cheaper for workers to move, TNCs can move goods
Telecoms
Internet - reduces isolation, share ideas, teleworkers
GPS/GIS - collect, manage and analyse satellite data
What is technological leapfrogging?
Bypassing technological stages that others had to go through
What are teleworkers?
Staff who work from home.
