Global Health Technology Flashcards
What are the three overlying expected benefits of incorporating technology in to global health strategies?
- Reduced costs means re-investment in to healthcare
- Global Convergence - bringing people closer together who are involved in addressing global health
- Health Equity - Implemented in to countries lagging behind can allow catch up or leapfrogging
What is the Gartner Hype Cycle?
Illustrates the life of a particular technology as it moved though time
How has geospatial technologies been revolutionised?
The introduction of smartphones that can access these technologies via the internet.
How many pieces of paper does one patient generate according to US hospitals? What sorts of implications does this have?
13 - admin, environmental, practicality, lack of distribution and security (only one), no continuity of care like technology
What is big data?
The data we produce daily using technology
What are the 4 v’s of big data?
Variety: lots of types of big data
Volume: So much of it
Velocity: It is produced rapidly
Veracity: Uncertainty
What is a problem with the accuracy of big data?
Its quantitative form means that there is accuracy lost
How can call detail records be used to analyse global health trends?
They can be used to determine strength of connections between places and therefore possibly the route of disease spread
How can improvements in mobile health technology achieve Singer’s (1972) idea?
they can enable remote health care between doctors and patients and may be able to transform in to medical devices e.g. heartrate monitors.
What are some of the limitations/perils of using technology in global health?
Technological Determinism - life unethically determined by tech
Technological Imperative - sometimes simple methods are better (patient>technology)
Privacy & Surveillance
Sustainability: Tech begins and remains a project meaning it requires constant attention and funding
Uneven distribution: Access to technologies not uniform meaning some health systems lag behind.
