'Global Health'? Flashcards
What 5 key principles define global health from the array of definitions?
- Focus on health issues transcending intl. borders.
- Global cooperation needed
- Focus on commonalities of health issues rather than differences
- Health is inextricably linked with other processes which requires a holistic approach
- In order to understand global health problems we need to understand it at the local?
What is a critique of the first principle of ‘global health’?
Do health issues have to transcend all borders to be global? Does global health involve breaking down borders.
What was an example of a health problem that raised the question of borders and why?
Ebola - portrayed in media as next global health problem despite being contained within only a few countries.
What is a critique of the second principle of ‘global health’?
Who is involved in this global cooperation? Govt., Public, Private, Philanthropy etc.? Global cooperation hindered by the fact that global health is predominantly a global north idea and the BRICS have their own health agenda
What is an example of a health strategy that raised the question of borders and why?
Cuba - it shares and distributes its high quality healthcare systems across the world. This is a unique way of achieving global health from a low income country rather than the presumed high income countries
What are critiques of the third principle of ‘global health’?
Similarities are confined to a few countries which contradicts with the second principle. Moreover, by focusing on commonalties, the differences which may become a global health problem in the future are ignored when they could have been prevented
What is a critique of the fourth principle of ‘global health’?
It is not always inextricably intertwined - these s.e.e factors are not even half of the determinants of health. The other determinants can not be changed easily
What is an example of how local health varies?
Glasgow - the life expectancy varies by 30 years
What is reverse innovation?
aiming to solve spatial inequalities that exist at a local scale by reincorporating healthcare initiatives intended for the global scale or that derive from other places in the world that are less developed that the country that the spatial inequalities exist within.
What is an example of reverse innovation?
In Seattle (A global health hub) there are efforts to improve the state of health at the local scale that is much worse.
What is located in Seattle that makes it a global health hub?
University of Washington and Bill and Mellinda Gates foundation HQ
