Infectious disease, NCDs, and injuries/other
WHAT are traditional risks of diseases (think poverty)
Poverty associated: Undernutrition, unsafe sex, water, poor sanitation/hygeine, indoor smoke
What are modern risks
Lifestyle: Smoking, alcohol, diet, inactivity
What does the epidemiological transition mean
as countries increase their level of development, early death and disability from communicable diseases are declining and life expectancies are rising
What causes the epidemiological shift?
Improvement in medical care, public health interventions, and an ageing population
What is the inverse care law
availability of good medical or social care tends to vary inversely with the need of the population served
