Global Food Production & Consumption Flashcards
What is the definition of overpopulation
Too many people in an area, relative to the amount of resources and the level of technology available locally to maintain a high standard of living
What is the definition of food security
When people have enough affordable and nutritious food to eat
What are the features of an over-populated area
- Low per capita income
- High unemployment levels
- Outward migration
- Lack of resources / demand for resources higher than availability E.g. dentist, hospitals, food, water & fuel
What is the definition of under population
Too few people in an area to use the resources efficiently for a given level of technology.
What are the features of under-populated areas
- Closure of services / shops
- Schools close due to lack of students & teachers
- Lack of employees
- Outward migration (people move to more populated areas)
- Waste of resources
What is the definition of optimum population
The theoretical population which, working with all the available resources, will produce the highest standard of living for the people of that area.
What are the features of optimum populate areas
- Dynamic concept (constantly changes)
- Tech improves so new resources become available which means more people can be supported
What are the environmental factors affecting population distribution causing a low population density
- Low precipitation levels
- Low temps
- Permafrost
- Dense vegetation
- Lack of clean water
- Active volcanoes
- Lack of fuel
- Mountainous
What are the environmental factors affecting population distribution causing a high population density
- Flat lowland areas
- Dormant volcanoes
- Access to fuel
- Reliable rainfall
- Grasslands
- Fertile soil
- Steady temperatures
What is the definition of malnutrition
Not having the correct nutrients to maintain a healthy lifestyle

What’s an example of an underpopulated country
