glands Flashcards
what is an exocrine gland?
synthesis and secrete product into ducts in organs or surfaces (skin)
what is an endocrine gland?
release product straight into the bloodstream
how are exocrine glands classified?
by method of secretion
by nature of secretion
by organisation of complex
holocrine secretion?
destruction whole cell during release of substance
merocrine secretion?
product release via exocytosis
apocrine secretion?
(product pinches of membrane, released membrane bound)
serous nature secretions?
watery secretions usually enyzmes
stain dark purple
mucous natured secretions?
secrete mucous, usually washed away during staining therefore appear foamy
what are mixed glands give example of tissue?
are both exocrine and endocrine
eg) pancreas - islet of langerhans release hormones into bloodstream and acinar cells release enzymes via ducts
3 types of cells in islet of langerhans and their secretions?
alpha cell - glucagon
beta cell - insulin
gamma cell - somatostatin
types of salivary glands
parotid gland - serous exocrine
submandibular gland - mixed gland
sublingual glands - serous exocrine
what are the layers of the adrenal gland?
zona glomerulosa
zona fasciculata
zona reticularis
adrenal medula
What type of hormones are released from zona glomerulosa and give an example?
mineralcorticoids - regulate mineral balance
eg) aldosterone
What type of hormones are released from zonafasciculata and give an example?
glucocorticoids - regulate glucose metabolism
eg) cortisol
What type of hormones are released from zona reticularis and give an example?
androgens - masculization
eg) testosterone
