Glaciers Flashcards
Ablation zone
Lower altitude area of glacier or ice sheet where there is a net loss
Accumulation zone
Where snow accumulates and is converted to ice such as cirque
Block stream
Boulder/rocks accumulate downslope in periglacial conditions
Cirque
Concavity in which snow and ice accumulate to develop a small glacier that feeds a larger glacier in below valley
Firn
Partially consolidated snow that has passed through one summer melt season but is not yet glacial ice
Glacial through
Valley area that becomes over deepened
Glaciofluvial
Melted glacial water flowing out of glacier base carrying sediment into outwash areas
Ice cap
Large body of ice that rests on the landsape. Surface topography is not related to the shape of the underlying landmass
Ice sheet
Large body of ice that rests on landscape (continental scale)
Meltwater channel
Water moving through and under the ice, carrying sediment beyond the ice nose
Moraine
Shaped landform of glacial deposits
Outwash
Sediment deposits from water outflowing from ice
Roches moutonees
More resistant bedrock outflowing from ice
Till
Sediment deposit left from glacial melting, can form moraines if shaped
