Biogeography & Diversity Flashcards
Existence/intrinsic values
Value in its own right and for it’s own sake, doesn’t need to be useful to humans or anything else to deserve respect
Geodiveristy
Diversity of landsforms on earth, with respect to their geology, geomorphic form and processes, soils present
Sustaining processes
Geomorphic processes such as water flow, wave action, wind action that maintain a geomorphic landform
System support values
Contribution of geodiveristy to ecological processes - geodiversity contributes habitat variety
Active dispersal
Organism provides the motor power
Biotic resistance
Repulsion of invaders by nature
Center of local endemsim
Concentration of species within small ranges
Disjunct distribution
One that contains a gap that is larger than the normal dispersal range of the organism
Disseminule
Part of an organism that can be dispersed to create a new individual (.e.g rhizome, seeds)
Ecotozoic dispersal
Movement of disseminules on the outside of animals
Endozoic dispersal
Movement of disseminules on the inside of animals
Metapopulation
A group of populations occasionally linked by gene flow
Migration
Occuers when dispersal results in establishment and reproduction
Passive dispersal
Forces or entities independent of the species being dispersed carry the disseminule
Reugia
Places where species retreat in inclement times
