Q

What is freeze thaw weathering?

A

When water gets into the cracks of a rock and then it expands by 8-10%. Bits of rock break off because of the high pressure.

A

When the glacier and the bottom base rub together like sandpaper moving along sediments.

Q

Formation of a corrie

A

A corrie is usually formed on a north facing hollow. Snow accumulates and glacier ice is formed.
During a glacial period the glacier erodes the hollow due to many processes such as plucking, abrasion and freeze thaw weathing. Abrasion moves the sediments along the base of the golow and plucking pulls the sediments at the back wall. Freeze thaw weathing creates a jagged back wall. Due to rotational slip and the force of gravity a deep hollow is formed with a roch lip.
After glaciation a corrie is formed and is usually filled with water or scree.

Q

Formation of Arêtes and pyramidal peak

A

Arête - Two corries run back to back (Striding edge)

Pyramidal peak - Three or more corries run back to back (Hellvellyn)

Q

Formation of a U-shaped valley

A

A U-shaped valley starts off as a V-shaped valley. Snow accumulates and a glacier is formed which runs down the valley, eroding the sides by plucking snd abrasion. This deepens the valley which creates a U-shaped valley.

Q

Describe and explain land use in glaciated areas

A

Tourism - Glaciation produces high relief which results in beautiful views.
Mountain climbing - Corrie sides and headlands are steep and good for climbing.
Winter sports - Alpine skiing and snowboarding, steep hills with snow is a good area for winter sports
Hunting - Wide moor home to grouse and deer which is good for hunting

Q

Solutions for conflicts in upland glaciated areas

A

Dogs have to be on leads
Bins provided throughout walks to stop pollution
Signs and gates to be put up for farmers to ensure crops wont be damaged and live stock wont be disturbed
Gates closed and proper pathways for walkers
Wind farmers elsewhere
