CBD centre of city, most accessabke part - Glasgows river Clyde, oldest part, grid pattern, expensive land values, lack of open space - Merchant city
Inner city - Govan
Near CBD, old heavy industrial factories, tenements, grid pattern, declining pop., air pollution, poor quality housing, visual pollution
New housing zone - Newton Mearns
Suburbs, more space, transport routes, cheaper land with gardens, low density, cul-de-sacs, nearby schools, greenland
New industrial zone - Hilligan industrial state
Outskirts of town, flat open space, away from congestion, main roads, large car parks
New business district - Braehead
Spacious, beside main road, easy access for shoppers, very large buildings, cheap land, space to extend, thousands of parking spaces
Rural/ urban fringe
Area at the very edge of city beside country
Urban sprawl
Growth of towns and cities spreading and taking over areas in the countryside
Changes in Glasgows CBD
Shopping centres - More enjoyable, indoors, not cold.
Competition - shops close down
Pedestrionised shopping - Safer, less polluted
Cars are restricted to other areas and congest streets
New 24 hour supermarkets - Buy everything people need
Butchers, fish mongers closed down - cannot compete
Multi storey car parks - Fewer cars illegally parked on streets
Expensive car parks
Factors involved in choosing where to live
Climate - Rain thoughout year, no extremes of temperatures. E.g - North - West Europe. Few people live where its cold. E.g - Nirthern Russia. Hard to grow crops, unpleasant and expensive to live there. Food has to be imported.
Resources - Where the environment provides useful resources, the pop. density is highest. Employment oppertunities. Scenery, attracts people to work and retire there.
Communications - Areas where there are many roads, rainways, airports and ports are more crowded. Attract industry - empolyment oppertunities. Remote areas deter people - Northern Canada
