Glaciation Flashcards
What is a glacier?
It is a large body of ice moving slowly down a slope or over a wide area of land
What three processes affect the land scape?
Erosion, transportation and deposition
How does a glacier form?
Snow falls and gets compressed into ice by the snow above it. This forms a glacier
Where to inputs come from?
Avalanches and mainly precipitation.
What are the main outputs
Meltwater and evaporation.
What is accumulation?
More inputs come in than outputs go out.
What is ablation?
More outputs go out than inputs go in.
What is frost shattering?
Glacial meltwater fills cracks and holes. The water thaws and causes the rocks to break up.
What is abrasion?
The moraine frozen to the bottom of the glacier acts like sand paper eroding the ground.
What is plucking?
The water on the bottom of the glacier freezes to rocks on the ground plucking them.
What is a corrie?
It is a hole that is filled with water and it expands making it an arm chair shape.
2 carries form a?
Arête
3 carries from a
Pyramidal peak
How does a u shaped Valley form?
The glacier slides down a v-shaped valley making it a u shape
What is a terminal moraine?
They are moraines found at the furthest end point of the glacier
What is a lateral moraine?
Found along the sides of the glacier
What is medial moraine?
Found a the junction between 2 glaciers
What is ground moraine?
Disorganised piles of rocks of various shapes, sizes and types found on the ground
What is recessional moraine?
Material found at the snout of the glacier as it retreats/advances
At sea level what are u-shaped valley formed into
Fjords
