Q

What should be considered before starting an Emergency Descent?

A
  • All Occupants Seated with seatbelts securely fastened (PA)
  • Local Altimeter setting if descending below FL 180
  • Any traffic conflicting below the aircraft (TCAS set to BLW)
  • Structural integrity of the aircraft (avoiding any excessive movement)
  • The level off altitude based on MEA/MORA/MVA, and surrounding terrain

Q

What is considered a stabilized approach?

A

If aircraft is below 1,000’/500’ (IMC/VMC) above the TDZE and

  • airspeed is greater than 10 knots or less than 5 knots from target approach speed
  • the rate of descent is greater than 1,000 FPM or
  • the engines are not at a stabilized torque setting
  • the course/glideslope parameters are not met
    • Precision Approach
      • Glideslope = 1 dot deflection
      • Localizer = 1/2 dot deflection
    • Non-Precision Approach
      • Bearing = 5 degrees deviation
      • LOC/VOR = 1 dot deviation
      • Airspeed = + 5 knots of that desired
      • Maintains MDA -0/+50 feet on a straight in

Q

What is considered the touchdown zone of the runway?

A
  • First 3,000 feet, or first third of the runway, whichever is shorter
  • for landing, aim for the 1,000 foot touchdown markers

Q

What are the Instrument altitude callouts for an approach?

A
1,000 feet from minimums
500 feet from minimums
200 feet from minimums
100 feet from minimums
minimums
  • lights in sight continue
  • runway in sight (clock position), Go visual
  • Minimums - Go Missed Approach

Q

What are the requirements for a Contact Approach?

A
  • Airport must have an approved IAP
  • PIC must have completed the required training program for contact approaches
  • Flight remains IFR and authorized by ATC
  • Visibility/RVR is above the IFR minimums for the CAT 1 (non precision) or 1 mile (5000 RVR) whichever is higher
  • Remain clear of clouds throughout the approach
  • Flight does not descend below the MEA/MSA/MVA or FAF altitude until:
    • Established on the instrument approach procedure
    • Flight is operating below any ceiling, and pilot can maintain constant visual contact with airport throughout the maneuver
  • Flight does not descend below highest circling MDA until in a position from which a descent to touchdown, within the touchdown zone, can be made at a normal rate of descent
