Giddens (1999) Risk society Flashcards
Risk society, Manufactured risk, External risk, weak causality & Organised irresponsibility
What does risk society mean?
Societies that are overly preoccupied with managing risks and safety
What is meant by end of nature and end of tradition?
End of nature= limited things in the world untouched by humans, scred of nature to scared of what we have done to nature
End of tradition= Tradition is no longer the focus of peoples lives, modern society= after tradition age
Giddens attempts to show that risk and responsibility are closely linked. HOW?
There is a societal shift where people have become more alert and aware of the risks of everyday choices. So more ware of risks= more resoponsible
So is the focus on science and technology positive or negative
Seems positive at first but negetive; science and technology actually creates more uncertainty as it is a newish pheneomena.
Manufactured risks?
New risk enviornemnt created because of human activity and intervention that we have no experience of/ evidence through out history (E.g AI issues )
External risks?
External risks= risks as aresult of natural occurances e.g floods etc
Weak causality?
Difficulty to point out / prove the cause of certain risks/problems
Oragnised irresponsibility?
Means that everyone(governemnt, institutions, individuals) are all deying responsibiliy and blame each other
What does Organised irresponsibity + Weakened causality =
It results in a society that is overly concerned with preventing and managing risks, and even risks that are highly unlikely
