GI: pancreas Flashcards
1
Q
Pancreatitis
- define
- etiology
A
inflammation of pancreas
- develops bc of obstruction to the outflow of pancreatic digestive enzymes caused by bile and pancreatic duct obstruction
- **obstruction MC gallstone
- **another MC etiology is ETOH
- prematurely activate pancreatic enzymes–autodigestion–
2
Q
causes of acute pancreatitis
A
ETOH abuse MC
- truama
- idiopathic 2MC
- hypocalcemia
- hyperlipidemia
- iselt cell tumors
- familial
- trauma
- iatrogenic
- gallstones NOT significant as in acute
3
Q
pancreatic exocrine insufficiency
-define
-
A
-insuff pancreatic enzyme production–lipase, amalyase, trypsin or chymotrypsin
causes:
- pancreatitis
- pacreatic carcinoma
- pancreatic resection
- CF
*fat maldigestion is the main problem–>PT will exhibit fatty stools and weight loss
4
Q
what are some causes of acute pancreatitis that can lead to chronic?
A
CF ETOH Trauma tumors infection--mumps, CMV, meds
5
Q
pancreatic CA
-types
A
- ductal adenocarcinomas–>pancreatic tumors from metaplastic exocrine cells in the ducts
Causes:
- chronic pancreatitis–>inflamatory cytokines suport tumor growth
- s/s show later on dz
- Pancreatic Neuroendocrine tumor–ex Insulinomas
