GI: pancreas Flashcards

1
Q

Pancreatitis

  • define
  • etiology
A

inflammation of pancreas

  • develops bc of obstruction to the outflow of pancreatic digestive enzymes caused by bile and pancreatic duct obstruction
  • **obstruction MC gallstone
  • **another MC etiology is ETOH

Q

causes of acute pancreatitis

A

ETOH abuse MC

  • truama
  • idiopathic 2MC
  • hypocalcemia
  • hyperlipidemia
  • iselt cell tumors

Q

pancreatic exocrine insufficiency
-define
-

A

-insuff pancreatic enzyme production–lipase, amalyase, trypsin or chymotrypsin

causes:
- pancreatitis
- pacreatic carcinoma
- pancreatic resection
- CF

*fat maldigestion is the main problem–>PT will exhibit fatty stools and weight loss

Q

pancreatic CA

-types

A
  1. ductal adenocarcinomas–>pancreatic tumors from metaplastic exocrine cells in the ducts

Causes:

  • chronic pancreatitis–>inflamatory cytokines suport tumor growth
  • s/s show later on dz
  1. Pancreatic Neuroendocrine tumor–ex Insulinomas
