GI: Motility Flashcards
Describe the function and control of prehension, mastication, salivation, and deglutition
- Prehension: function, to grab food.
- Mastication: function: break down food, trigeminal nerve V
- Salivation: lubricate and break down
- Deglutition: swallowing, glossopharyngeal nerve IX
Describe the structure and functions of the esophagus
mouth to stomach transport, smooth muscle. primary and secondary peristalsis.
Describe the control of gastric secretions and motility and the interactions of the stomach with the rest of the digestive tract.
Dogs should digest food in two hours, stomach should be empty after eating after two hours.
Peristaltic waves, gastrin, emptying a bit at a time through pyloric sphincter
Relate what is learned about small intestinal physiology to the pathogenesis and treatment of diarrhea.
Malabsorptive: Gastrointestinal epithelium is lost… can’t absorb anything. Parvo
Secretory: E coli makes a toxin that increases secretion. intestinal secretions overwhelms absorptive capacity
List the different types of intestinal motility and their function.
Small intestinal motility: digestion and absorption, mixing waves. Peristalsis (propulsion) and segmentation (mixing and circulating). Migrating motility complexes (MMC): housekeeping function.
Large intestine: Mix chyme: enhance fluid/electrolyte absorption (haustral contractions) and Propel fecal material
Describe the storage and mixing functions of the stomach.
Digestive juices made by gastric glands, as long as food is present, mixing waves are present. Tries not to overwhelm duodenom with acid.
