GI: Digestion and Absorption I Flashcards
Describe gastric digestive and absorptive function.
The intestinal enzymes just sit on the intestinal mucosa.
Stomach only makes one enzyme, a pepsin that breaks down a protein
Summarize the role of the pancreas in digestion of proteins, starch and fat.
The pancreas has one carb digestive enzyme, amylase.
Three protein digestive enzymes, trypsin, chromotrypsin, and carboxypeptidase.
& fat digestive enzymes, lipase, phospholipase and cholesterol esterase.
Describe the processes of digestion and absorption of protein, starch and fat: intraluminal and surface.
Carbohydrates come in the form of starches or simple sugars. Proteins are huge chains of amino acids that start getting digested in the stomach, and continue in the intestines with trypsin and at the brush border with peptidases.
