GI: Digestion and Absorption II Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the mechanisms for transport of sodium, hexoses, fatty acids, peptides and amino acids into and out of the small intestinal enterocyte.

A

ADEK are fat soluble vitamins and requires bile. B12 only happens in ileum and when bound to intrinsic factor. B12 is involved in the production of red blood cells.
Calcium is absorbed independently of everything and iron has its own transporters and can come in by itself or hemoglobin.
Animals can absorb fully intact antibodies in endocytotic vesicles. “Failure of passive transfer”.
Colon only absorbs water, if feces comes out red, bleeding likely from colitis.
