Go over the normal commensals of the GI tract
What are the main gram pos cocci organisms ?
staphylococci + streptococci (including enterococci - E.faecalis & E.faecium)
What are the gram neg cocci organisms ?
Neisseria meningitidis + Neisseria gonorrhoeae
What are the main gram pos bacilli (rods) and how do you remember them ?
mnemonic = ABCD L
- Actinomyces
- Bacilli
- Clostridium
- Diphtheria: Corynebacterium diphtheriae
- Listeria monocytogenes
List the gram neg bacilli (rods)
- Escherichia coli
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Salmonella sp.
- Shigella sp.
- Campylobacter jejuni
What is the main spirochete organism which you may find in relation to the GI tract ?
Helicobacter pylori
What are the main GI tract coliforms and what specific features do they have microbiologically
Enterobacteriacae:
- Most strains of Escherichia coli
- Klebsiella spp.
- Enterobacter spp
- Proteus spp
Gram neg bacilli, which are lactulose pos and mainly anaerobes
What are the main mouth commensals ?
- Strep. “viridans”, Neisseria sp., anaerobes
- Candida sp. (few), Staphylococci
What are the main stomach/dudodenum commensals ?
- Usually sterile
- Few Candida sp. & Staphylococci may survive
What are the main jejunum commensals ?
Small numbers of coliforms and anaerobes
What are the main colon commensals ?
Large numbers of coliforms, anaerobes and Enterococci
What are the main bile duct commensals ?
It is usually sterile
What are the main anaerobes found in the GI tract ?
Clostridium sp., Bacteroides sp., and anaerobic cocci
