GI Gall baldder Flashcards
What is the function of bile?
1) Bile salts bind with lipids to form micelles. This is then absorbed through the intestinal mucosa.
2) The excretion of bilirubin.
Where are bile salts produced and from what?
In the liver from cholesterol.
Where are bile canaliculi?
Between hepatocyes into which there bile can drain.
What causes bile to be expelled from the gall balder and how?
CKK release causes the gall bladder to contract. Expulsion occurs through the cycstic duct into the common bile duct and into the duodenum through the ampulla.
How are bile salts and toxins absorbed into the liver?
Through the portal vein.
How does bile travel into the gall bladder?
From hepatocytes->bile canaliculi ->bile duct-> common hepatic duct-> cystic duct-> gall bladder.
How do bile salts cause peptic ulcers?
Dueodeno-gastric reflux and bile salts strip away the mucus layer.
Where are bile salts reabsorbed?
Jejunum to the Ileum.
How is bile in the liver different to concentrated bile?
Bile in the liver is rich in na+,cl-,ca2+ and k+.
Concentrated bile is alkali with low concentration of ions.
What occurs to bile in the common hepatic duct?
Na+ and Cl- are reabsorbed.
HCO3- is excreted.
What occurs in the gallbladder?
Na+ and Cl- are reabsorbed further concentrating bile.
What is bilirubin?
The product of the breakdown of heme that gives bile its colour.
Where is bilirubin produced?
The spleen.
