- Suffix: -Tidine
- SE: stomach infection
- Take 30 min before meals

- TX: peptic ulcers and GERD
- Neutralize acid
- Sodium bicarbonate
- Calcium carbonate
- Aluminum hydroxide
- Magnesium hydroxide
- Ca and Al =constipation
- Mg = GI upset/diarrhea
- Not with meals or meds

A
- Tx: ulcers and GERD
- Suffix: -prazole
- SE: GI upset
- Prophylaxis in hospital
- take 30 min before first meal of day
- Take Ca and vit D to prevent osteoporosis

Sucralfate
A
Prevention/short term tx of duodenal ulcers
- dont reduce acid but protect from it
- SE: constipation
- dont take acid refusing meds within 30 min
- take all meds 1-3 hours before or after bc it can decrease their effectiveness

Loperamide
A
Antidiarrheal
- decreases intestinal peristalsis
- SE: chemically r/t opioids but no analgesic effect
- don’t use for more than 2 days

Lactulose
A
- Laxative
- ammonia detox
- normal ammonia 15-110
- adjust dose to achieve 2-3 soft stools a day

Metoclopramide
A
- Gi stimulants
- Tx N/V, GERD, gastric stasis
- Major risk for extrapyramidal effects: tar dive dyskinesia
- Dry mouth common

Ondansetron
A
- Antiemetic
- Serotonin antagonist
- Risk for Torsade De Pointes: Potentially fatal Heart rhythm

-Tx: gastric ulcers in clients with longterm NSAID use
-Cervical ripening agent
AE: GI upset

Docusate sodium
A
- Stool softner
- Increases water content
- Not for those with bowel obstruction

Pancrelipase
A
Pancreatic enzyme
- Tx: pancreatic insufficiency common in CF
- Tx: ductal obstruction
- anything that ends in -ASE is an enzyme
- SE: Abd cramps, N/V, diarrhea
- Must be eaten with every meal/snack
- Works with food
