Describe how a users interacts with Google Analytics?
An analytics account can be set up to track different web properties (e.g. a website, web app).
An account can give different users access to the different properties in the account.
You can set up different views of the Web properties. You might have one view thats hows everything then another that excludes traffic from a particular source (e.g. office traffic)
What is a tracking ID?
Each Web property has a unique tracking ID that differentiates it from other sources
Why’s it a good idea to have a master view and then a test view?
If you making changes to views these are not retroactive (won’t change past data but only from now on)
Tip: If setting up an account for business, create a separate Google Account
Different Google users can then be given access to the Google Business Account
When creating an account what benefit does the industry category provide?
It provides benchmarking information. Compares you site to others in same industry (no identifying information is provided; it’s aggregated information)
How do we track websites?
We either add tracking code to each page
Another option is use Google Tag manager, which adds tracking information to your site without needing to update individual pages
What does UA stand for?
Universal Analytics
How do we add a new view?
Admin > View > New View
How do filters work?
Allow you to include and exclude traffic.
E.g. you won’t want traffic from inside your business
There are predefined options but it’s possible to set up custom
Admin > View > Filters
What’s the advantage of a lowercase filter?
Forces all URLS to be read as lowercase.
It’s possible for letter case to affect how results are interpreted e.g. PAGE.html and page.html might get treated differently through they are the same page
Does it matter what order the filters are applied in?
Yes, will affect the results.
Use assign filter order to alternate order
