A
- The artist depciting their emotional reaction in an individual way
- Uses a lot of bright, free, and distortion of colour and shape

Influences
A
- Van Gogh- Strong use of colour, distortion of nature, linear brushstrokes
- Non-Western- They inspiried because they lacked the superficiality of western art, specifically African masks as they were seen as pure
- Mentally ill and children- They express emotion the most directly
- Germanic character- searching behind appearances
- Edvard Munch- Heavy and violent distortion of colour and shape to give form to emotional states

A
- Three architecture students (Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidtt-Rotluff, Erich Heckel) started an association called Die Brucke because linked all the revolutionary elements.. They rented an old butcher shop and worked there to their own desire. They dissolved it on the eve of WW1

- Mainly primary and secondary colours used
- Colours later became more sombre and dark
- Colours like green, yellow, black were used unnaturalistically
- Strong colour contrast portrayed conflict in life

- Elongated
- Dark outline around shapes
- All subjects were squished into the space
- Diagonal lines stretch from background to foreground

- Depicted a barbaric beauty
- Paint was applied roughly as if in a hurry/haste

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

- Served in WW1 and became depressed because of it
- That depression was a big contribution to the Expressionism of his works
- His artworks were featured in Germany’s exhibition for degenerate art and 500 of them were burned
- One of the best examples of Die Brucke are his paintings depciting Germany’s rich people who were paraiding their expensive clothing while people were suffering during the war

- Five women with no interaction in their own space
- Collours are sombre, black, acid-yellow, acid-green
- Has a strong vertical feel
- Women are very packed in the space and do not allow viewer to escape scene
- Foreground and background become one
- Commentary on modern man caugth up in an inhumane environment

Self-portrait as a soldier

- He paints himself as a soldier to represent his identity crisis after he fought in the war
- His right, painting hand is cut off to represent his creativity dying and his struggle to continue working with the effects of the PTSD
- Depicts his anticipation of his self-destruction
- Looks forward with empty, hollow eyes to represent the little hope he has for his future
- Black uniform contrasts the vibrant red
- Turned away from the nude woman to show how his world is falling apart and how he cannot paint her
