Stage 1
Increase feelings of stress immediately after event
Individual may try to use past problem solving and coping skills
Stage 2
Client stress increases as usual coping mechanisms fail
Stage 3
Stress continues to escalate, feelings of hopelessness, depression and anxiety arise
Stage 4
Individual finds method to resolve situation or they experience psychological and emotional collapse
Engage and Assess
Engagement- helping de-escalate situation by establishing rapport, using empathy, employing emotional management techniques and accessing outside systems
Assessment- assess the crisis situation to determine the level of care and how the client has been impacted
Set goals and implement treatment
Primary goal should be to assist clients in returning to pre-crisis functioning
