Geothermal energy Flashcards
where are geothermal resources found?
convergent and/or divergent lithospheric plate boundaries
molten magma near surface or areas of volcanic activity
sources of earth internal heat
conduction
heat of formation
radioactive decay
classification of geothermal sites
liquid dominated. hot liquids
vapor dominated. water turned to steam
hot dry rock. water needs to be pumped to the rock
geothermal exploration surveys?
geochemical surveys
temp gradient hole drilling
criteria for choosing a site for geothermal energy generator
magma intrusion
presence of geofluid
porous rock for a reservoir
caprock
types of thermal generator power plant
dry steam
flash steam- produce steam and extract from fluid
binary cycle- 2 cycles. 1 brings in heat and 1 extracts it
name some countries using geothermal powerplants
philippines australia usa new zealand china
geothermal process
5 steps
- fluid in subsurface is heatedby heat energy in the rock
- heated fluid gets pumped in and converted to steam
- steam turns the turbines producing energy
- if the fluid is still steam then goes to cooling towers
- fluid is returned to the ground to the subsurface reservoir
