Geology of Diamonds Flashcards
Where do diamonds form?
Diamonds form in the mantle?
Where are diamonds typically found?
Diamonds are typically found under cratons.
What are cratons?
Cratons are old and stable part of the continental lithosphere. Cratons have thick lithospheric roots
What is subduction zone?
Boundary where two tectonic plates collide and, because of differences in density, one dives beneath the other. The denser and thicker oceanic plate is shoved underneath the less dense continental plate.
What is happening to the earth?
There’s continuous change happening.
What is going on underneath the earth?
Heat, Pressure, Movement.
What is the earth’s diameter?
12,700 kilometer
Which layer of the earth do we extract valuable minerals?
The crust
What is the mantle composed of?
Oxygen compounds, iron, silicon, magnesium and aluminum. It is hot but solid.
