Flourescence Flashcards
What is fluorescence?
It’s response from a diamond that which causes emission of visible light during exposure to ultraviolet light. General term used to describe the emission of visible light by substance whilst it is being illuminated by radiation of shorter wavelengths and higher energy.
What is Luminescence?
Any emission of light by a mineral that is not the direct result of incandescence.
What causes fluorescence?
Usually by impurities called activators and can usually be seen in the dark. Also a aggregate of 3 nitrogen atoms.
What is Phosphorescent?
Continued luminesce (glow) for a few seconds after the removal of the radiation energy.
Is there a strong relationship between transparency and fluoresce?
No
How does luminesce happen?
Provided by visible light, UV, or X-rays.
Explain fluoresce?
Energy of incoming radiation is absorbed by the substance. Some is then released as visible fluorescent light.
What is the color of fluorescence?
It is substance maybe be quite different from its normal color under white light.
What does fluorescence signify?
Fluorescence effects may provide does guidance in identification and in detection of treatments.
X-Rays
Use fluorescence as an identifying characteristic.
Premier
Light yellow diamonds with strong blue fluorescence.
Jager
Colorless stones with strong blue fluorescence
