Geology Flashcards
Label the layers of the earth
1: Crust
2: mantle
3: outer core
4: inner core
What part of the earth’s structure is thought to be liquid?
Outer core
Which layer of the earth has the properties of a solid but can flow like a liquid under pressure?
Mantle
Name the materials that the core is thought to be made of
Nickel and iron
How is the heat in the center of the earth created?
There are three main sources of heat in the deep earth: (1) heat from when the planet formed and accreted, which has not yet been lost; (2) frictional heating, caused by denser core material sinking to the center of the planet; and (3) heat from the decay of radioactive elements.
Example of chemical weathering?
-Carbonation is the process of rock minerals reacting with carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is formed when water combines with carbon dioxide. Carbonic acid dissolves or breaks down minerals in the rock.
Example of physical weathering
Block disintegration occurs when rocks split along joints. This can happen as a result of repeated cycles of freezing and thawing, which can happen in climates where there is a lot of moisture and the temperature goes up and down a lot around the freezing point.
