Ecology Flashcards
What is a consumer?
Eats other organisms for energy?
What is a herbivore?
A plant eater, only eats plants.
What is a carnivore?
A meat eater, only eats meat.
What is an omnivore?
A plant and meat eater.
What is a predator?
At the top of the food chain. Hunts their prey.
What is prey?
The animals that are hunted by their predators.
Ecosystem?
The habitat and organisms that live there.
Community?
The living things that live and function in a certain place.
Population?
The count of how many things live there.
Biotic factor?
Things that are alive (plants and animals)
Abiotic factor?
Things that are not living (rocks, water temperature, moisture)
Ecological niche?
Their specific role in that habitat.
Carbon cycle?
The cycle of carbon in the air, plant and animals
Decomposition?
The process of dead material breaking down into simple substances.
Food chain?
The order of which animals live/eat by.
What are three features that help a leopard seal survive?
- Blubber to keep them warm
- Whiskers for detecting
- Body shape designed for swimming
What’s behavioral adaption?
The adaption an organism makes to its behavioral habits to help it survive.
Physical Adaptions?
An adaption an organism makes to its physical appearance or structure to help it survive.
Food and plants have…
Carbon
The carbon cycle.
Atmosphere (CO2)◀️ Respiration (animals create and goes into atmosphere)◀️ Animals (Die and decay)◀️ Glucose feeding (animals eat glucose made plants) ◀️ Plants (45% carbon from atmosphere)
Define decomposition?
Decomposition is the matter that is being broken down into different substances. This takes place on food, plants, and dead animals.
How does decomposition occur?
Leaves fall off trees and get decomposed.
Insects and fungi help decomposition.
Broken down into mineral salts, water and co2.
Mineral salts are returned to the soil and co2 to the air.
Name some decomposes?
Wood lice, millipedes, earthworms, lavas and bacteria. Termites help speed up the process. Fungi eats the dead plant matter. Crabs and sand hoppers too (feed on dead fish)
What is an impact humans have on the enviroment?
Oil spills, air pollution from factories and cars, chopping trees down, dumping waste
