Electricty Flashcards
Describe the electric current in terms of flow
The battery makes the electrons provided in the metal wire all move in the same direction.
What is voltage?
The energy given to each electron.
What is a Volt?
The unit for voltage
Symbol for variable (voltage)
V
Symbol for unit (volts)
V
What is current?
Current is the “rate of flow of coulombs” in an electrical circuit. Electric current is a flow.
What is the unit for current?
Amps
Symbol for variable (current)
I
Symbol for unit (amps)
A
The unit for power?
Watts
Symbol for variable (power)
P
Symbol for unit (watts)
W
Resistance?
Resistance is a measure of how much a component decreases the current. The bigger the resistance, the smaller the current.
Unit for resistance?
Ohms
Symbol for variable (resistance)
R
Symbol for unit (ohms)

Equation for power…
Power= Current X voltage
P=IV
Equation for voltage…
Voltage=current X resistance
V=IR
Why do materials get hot?
Electrons moving, jumping into atoms, releasing energy as heat
How does a fuse wire working?
The wire melts if too much current flows through, so that it breaks the circuit and avoids overheating and creating a fire.
Energy given to each electron…
Voltage
Flow of electrons…
Current
Which circuit will keep two bulb brighter and why?
Parallel circuit because in a series the current flows through both bulbs which both act as resistors and slow the electrons, where as in a parallel circuit the current breaks off onto branches and so there is only one resistor for the electrons.
How does voltage change between parallel and series?
The voltage in a parallel circuit is higher in volts than a series circuit.
