What is a map?
A drawing of an area from ABOVE showing places and things such as roads, towns, rivers and mountains.
Drawn as if you were looking down on the area
What do we mean by a view?
a way of seeing something
What is a plan?
A drawing as seen from above
What is side view?
A side view is what you see when you look at something from the side
What is plan view?
When you see something down on the ground from ABOVE, for example MAPS are in plan view
What is a symbol on a map?
a SIGN such as a picture, letter, number or colour, that has a special MEANING on a map like WHERE things are.
Symbols make it easier to draw and read maps
What is the key on a map?
the key to a map is a list that tells you what the symbols on the map mean
What is a grid?
a pattern of STRAIGHT LINES that go left to right and top to bottom, and CROSS over each other to form BLOCKS
(another way to say it: a grid is a pattern of VERTICAL and HORIZONTAL lines that INTERSECT)
What is a grid on a map?
A pattern of straight lines that are drawn over a map to help us find places on a map
What is a grid reference?
NUMBERS and LETTERS on the SIDE (left) and TOP of a grid that label the SPACES between the grid lines, which help you find places on a map

What is another name for a grid reference?
A diamond reference
What is a compass?
an instrument that shows directions
What is a direction?
the way someone or something is pointing or moving
Draw a compass with the 4 main directions on it.
Where does the sun come up?
The sun comes UP in the EAST
