what is an aerial photograph
It is an image taken from an aeroplane
what are the 2 types of aerial photographs
if the aeroplane is directly above the area to be photographed, it is a vertical aerial photograph. If the image is taken at an angle, it is an oblique aerial photograph
what is the difference between an oblique and vertical aerial photograph?
- on an oblique, you can see the sides of buildings, trees, mountains and the sky
- on a vertical, you can only see the tops of features, e.g. buildings
what is an orthophoto map?
it is a vertical aerial photograph that has been modified to give it some features of a map

- It is a vertical aerial photograph
- The scale is always 1:10 000
- Certain features are labelled
how is height shown on orthophoto maps?
one way that height is shown is with contour lines
how do you know if the area is flat on an orthophoto map?
if there are a few contour lines on the orthophoto map, it shows that the area is flat or almost flat
