Geography - TDC Term 1 Flashcards
what do aerial photograph’s show?
Aerial photographs show the view of land taken from a camera attached under an aeroplane.
What do oblique aerial photographs show?
Oblique aerial photographs show the land from above at an angle
What do vertical aerial photographs show?
vertical aerial photographs show the land from directly above the earth’s surface.
what do vertical aerial photographs do?
they help cartographers view the earth’s surface from the same angle as a map.
define contour line
it is a symbolic horizontal line that shows the height and shape of a slope
what do we use contour lines for?
we use contour lines on maps to give us information about the height and shape of a landscape feature, e.g. mountains, hills or valleys.
what are used to represent objects on the ground?
symbols and colours on maps are used to represent objects on the ground
what does each contour line do?
each contour line connects places that have the same height above sea level
True or false. the pattern that contours lines on make on a map show the height and feature on land.
true
what is contour interval?
it is the distance between each contour
name 4 popular features on topographic maps
mountains, hills, spurs and river valleys
what does gradient describe?
it describes the steepness of a slope
what does steepness do?
it tells us about the angle of the slope
if there is a big difference in height, will the slope have a steel or gentle gradient?
it will have a steep gradient
give the formula to calculate gradient
Gradient =
Vertical height difference
————————————-
horizontal distance
e.g. if hill has height of 100 meters and vertical height of 1000 meters.
gradient=Vertical height distance = 100m=1
——————————- = ——-=—-
horizontal distance 1000m 10
