11
Q

River erosion: Describe Hydraulic action

A

The force of the river against the banks can cause air to be trapped in cracks. The pressure weakens the banks and wears it away over time

12
Q

River erosion: Describe abrasion

A

Rocks carried along by the river rub and scrape the river bed and banks

13
Q

River erosion: Describe attrition

A

Rocks carried by the river smash together and break into smaller, smoother and rounder rocks

16
Q

River transportation: Describe solution

A

Dissolved material is carried along as a solution and you can’t see it

17
Q

River transportation: Describe suspension

A

Light material is carried in the water

18
Q

River transportation: Describe Traction

A

Large rocks are rolled along the river bed

19
Q

River transportation: Describe saltation

A

Small pebbles and stones are bounced along the river bed

20
Q

What is deposition?

A

As the river reaches flatter land, it loses energy and drops or deposits its load

21
Q

What is deposited material called?

A

Sediments

22
Q

What is a river’s long profile?

A

It shows changes in the height of a river course from source to mouth

23
Q

What is cross profile?

A

It shows a cross section of a rivers channel and valley at different points on the rivers course

24
Q

What happens in the upper course of a rivers long profile?

A

-Erosion
-River has lots of energy here

25
Q

What happens in the river’s middle course?

A

Both erosion and deposition

26
Q

What happens in the lower course of a river?

A

-Deposition
-River loses energy

27
Q

Cross section of a river valley: What happens in the upper course?

A

-V - shaped valley
-The river erodes downwards

28
Q

Cross section of a river valley: What happens in the middle course?

A

-The banks are being eroded so the channel gets wider
-A flood plain forms

29
Q

Cross section of a river valley: What happens in the lower course

A

-The channel is even wider and a bit deeper
-Floodplain is also wider
