4 figure grid reference / what is northing and what is easting
Easting is the first 2 digits, they show how far east or west you are on the OS map
Northing is the second 2 digits, they show how far north or south you are on the OS map
What is freeze - thaw
It is a type of weathering. Water settles into the cracks in the rocks, then freezes and expands (breaks)
What are the loose bits of freeze - thaw called
Its called Scree
What is abrasion
Rock fragments in the ice grind against the rock overwhich the ice is moving and erodes away the land
What effect can abrasion have when the ice scrapes the rocks

In the valley floor when large rocks are frozen into the glacier and move along scratching it
What is plucking
When melt water at the base of the glacier freezes on the rock surface, as the glacier moves forwards it takes pieces of the rock surface
What does Plucking leave behind
A jagged rocky surface
What is a V shaped (river valley)
Its a valley that has been shaped by a river, it is narrow and steep, and has spurs of hard land and rocks scree
What is a U shaped glacial valley
It is a very wide relitivly straight valley, it gently curved on the sides with a U shape, small stream , grassed surfaces, glacial trough
What is an Arete
when two glaciers flowing in parallel valleys create a ridge
