geography Flashcards
tributary
a river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake
renewable and non renewable
renewable can replenish itself for example fresh water
non renewable is limited for example coal
water scarcity
water scarcity is shortage of water when not enough people have access to water
water catchment meaning
area of land where rainfall/precipitation flows to a lower elevation, such as rivers, lakes or oceans
what other factors play a role in determining how much water is collected in a catchment area receives and finding trends
the topography of the area might have more coastlines or coasts which has more water available and flat lands don’t have water available because it absorbs into the soil
evaporation
when the water gets heated and turns into vapour
transpiration
water is lost through the leaves of plants and becomes vapour
condensation
when the vapour gets carried by the wind and cools down and makes water droplets
precipitation
water droplets are blown into each other by wind and falls down as rain
runoff
excess water that flows over land
infiltration
water that has filtered into the ground below the surface
accumulation
when water forms up to make lakes or river
