Nonfiction
Systematic interpretation or explanation of a specific topic
Exposition
Assertion or a series of assertions presented and defended by the writer
Argument
an everyday text (signs, directions, letters, manuals)
Functional text
A text where an author muses on a particular topic (formal or informal)
Personal essay
A written work read aloud to an audience
Speech
A short text where the author describes and gives their opinion about a topic
Opinion piece
A formal or informal assessment of a piece of art of literature
Essay (about art or literature)
A true account of the author’s life story, usually from childhood to current
Biography
A short focused piece of an author’s life (sub-genre of biography)
Memoir
A factual report of current events in pop culture, politics, or local events
Journalism
A written record of a historical event

A written record of a scientific discovery or finding
Scientific account
All forms of writing that tell a story or are not based in real life; main purpose is entertainment
Fiction
An extended narrative (The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn)
Novel
A narrative that includes fictionalized accounts of historical events (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas)
Historical Fiction
A story that involves crime or law enforcement (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes)
Mystery
A story usually set in the future with advanced technology (Fahrenheit 451)
Science Fiction
Stories written to be performed; usually include acts, scenes, dialogue, stage directions, character descriptions (Death of a Salesman)
Dramas/Plays
A short story used to tell a lesson (The Good Samaritan)
Parable
A traditional story that represents a false/unverifiable history (King Arthur)
Legend
Stories retold by a culture that explain natural phenomenons or the history of a place
Myth
A traditional oral tale told through generations of a specific culture or region, often involves magic and/or talking animals; generally teaches a lesson to the reader (Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox)
Folktale
