genomes Flashcards
what is a genome?
an individuals entire DNA sequence on chromosome.
how come there are differentiated cells when DNA is same in each?
becuase different cells express different sets of genes from genome. - different transcripteomes and proteomes
what are housekeeing genes?
genes expressed in all cells of organism
what is autosomal chromosome?
appear in pairs - any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome
what is centromere?
part of chromosome that links chromatids. the kinetochore assembles on centrosome which allows attachment of spindle fibres during mitosis
whatis replication origin?
DNA sequence where replication is initiated
what is telomere?
repetitive DNA sequence at end of linear chromosome which prevents/protects from deterioration or fusing.
what enzyme maintains telomere?
telomerase
how war circular bacterial chromosome replicated?
in bidirectional fashion
name trends between gene number and organism size
gene numbers increase as organism complexity increases therefor genome size also increases. gene density decreases as organsims become more complex.
