Genitourinary tract Flashcards
UTI: what does it infect, what is the agent and what is it? How is it transmitted
Urinary system. Escherioli coli which is a bacteria. Transmitted by direct contact.
UTI: what is a virulence mechanism?
Adhesion
Vaginitis: what are the infectious agents? what are they? How are they transmitted?
Candida albicans (yeast infection), trichomonas vaginalis. CA is a fungus while TV is a protozoan. transmitted by
CA- opportunistic, disruption of normal microbiots
TV- direct contact (STI)
Candida albicans (yeast infection), trichomonas vaginalis: What are the virulence mechanisms?
CA- None really, white colonies on vagina. Fungus is not invasive, but if it gets into the bloodstream it can be fatal.
T- None really, can make a person more susceptible to other infections.
Vaginosis: what does it infect? What are the infectious agents? what is it? how is it transmitted?
Reproductive tract. Mixed infection (reduction of good bacteria). It is a bacteria. Transmitted by opportunism or STI.
Gonorrhea: what does it impact? what is the infectious agent and what is it? how is it transmitted?
Resproductive. Neisseria gonorrhoeae which is a bacteria. Transmitted by direct contact (sexual) and/or vertical
Gonorrhea: what is a virulence mechanism?
Use of phase variation and antigenic variation on fimbriae
Chlamydia: what is the infectious agent and what is it? how is it transmitted?
Chlamydia trachomatis which is a bacteria. Transmitted by direct STI or vertical
Syphilis: what does it impact? what is the infectious agent and what is it? how is it transmitted?
Reproductive. Treponema palidum which is a bacteria. Transmitted by direct and vertical
Syphilis: what is a virulence mechanism?
Lipid proteins causing inflammatory response, damaging host and itself
Genital Herpes: what does it affect? what is the infectious agent and what is it? how is it transmitted?
Genituary. Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2. it is a virus. Transmitted by direct or vertical
Genital Herpes: what is a virulence mechanism?
latency
Leptospirosis: what does it impact What is the infectious agent and what is it? how is it transmitted?
Kidneys. Leptospira interrogans which is a gram-neg bacteria. Transmitted by vehicle transmission through contaminated soil or water.
Leptospirosis: what is a virulence mechanism?
Adhesions and invasion proteins.
