Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Diseases Flashcards
What body system(s) and organ(s) does the plague impact?
Lymphatic system. Swollen lesions on the skin called bubos
Plague: What is/are the name of the infectious agent, what is it, and how is it transmitted?
Yersinia pestis. It is a bacterium. Transmitted through vector (fleas through contact of animals), droplet, direct contact.
Virulence mechanism for plague
Capsule formation, plasminogen activator.
What body system(s) and organ(s) does Lyme’s disease impact?
Skin, nevous, cardiac
Lyme’s: What is/are the name of the infectious agent, what is it, and how is it transmitted?
Borrelia burgdorferi. It is a bacteria. Transmitted through ticks (biological vector) only
Virulence mechanism for Lyme’s?
Antigen shifting, alters surface proteins. Avoids detection by switching surface proteins.
What body system(s) and organ(s) does Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever impact?
Cardiovascular and lymphatic system and skin, certain effects on CNS. Can lead to heart failure.
Rocky Mountain Fever: What is/are the name of the infectious agent, what is it, and how is it transmitted?
Rickettsia rickettsii. It is a bacterium. It is transmitted Only through ticks (arthropod vector). Dog tick is responsible for transfer to humans.
Infectious mononucleosis: What is/are the name of the infectious agent, what is it, and how is it transmitted?
Epstein-Barr virus. It is a virus. Transmitted by indirect, direct, or parenteral
Malaria: What is/are the name of the infectious agent, what is it, and how is it transmitted?
Plasmodium. It is a protozoan. It is transmitted by a biological vector (mosquito), vertical.
Anthrax: What is/are the name of the infectious agent, what is it, and how is it transmitted?
Bacillus anthracis. It is a Gram-pos bacteria (endospore forming). It is transmitted by respiratory droplet or Endospores into a cut.
Hemorrhagic Fever Diseases (Ebola/Marburg): What is/are the name of the infectious agent, what is it, and how is it transmitted?
Ebola virus or Marburg virus. It is a virus. It is transmitted by direct contact, body fluids.
Brucellosis: What is/are the name of the infectious agent, what is it, and how is it transmitted?
Brucella family. Anything with B in front. It is a gram-neg bacteria. Transmitted by Zoonotic, contact with infected animals. Rare for it to be transmitted from human to human
What body system(s) and organ(s) does Infectious mononucleosis impact?
Swollen Lymph glands, fever, sore throat
What body system or organs does anthrax impact?
Cardiovascular (blood stream), skin, lungs, GI
