Genetics, Evolution, & Heredity Flashcards
Explain dominant & recessive traits
Dominant traits will always be displayed
Sometimes genes will be carried for recessive traits
Ex. Brown eye dominant
Blue eye recessive
- Brown eye will show
Where is the genetic code of organism stored?
Housed in the nucleus
DNA
deoxyribonucleic acid
What is a great way to determine what kind of gene a child will receive
Where was the determined?
Punit square
Capitalized represents dominant
Lower case represents recessive
Gregory Mindell (scientist & monk) discovered by Breeding pea plants recessive traits can show eventually
What does Darwin’s theory of evolution state?
What are variants?
Darwin’s theory of evolution asserts that organisms have changed over time to adapt to the unique and varied demands of their changing environments
- organisms acquiring different traits from each parent **
- thus having a different set of traits
Ex. Giraffes have longer neck than parents based on DNA combinations
What is some supporting evidence of Darwin’s theory of evolution?
- fossil records
* ** different organisms have changed over time - comparative anatomy
* ** whales have feet from when they were on land - DNA sequences
* ** hippos and whales have similar traits. Could have evolved from same organism
What is natural selection?
It causes beneficial traits to be propagated and detrimental traits to be eliminated
If a trait is advantageous or disadvantageous depends on the?
Environment
If the giraffe needs a long neck to reach high fruit, it will be advantageous
If it does not need the long neck, it could be cumbersome and disadvantageous
