Genetics Flashcards
What is meiosis?
a type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell
What is mitosis?
a type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus
Function of DNA
Contains chromosomes which make up which types of alleles an organism has.
Function of gene.
Contains DNA
Define: Gamete
The two types of reproductive cell - Sperm and Ovum
Define: Zygote
The fertilized egg.
Define: Embryo
The form of life which the zygote develops into.
Define: Fertilization
The process in which the Ovum combines with the Sperm.
Why is variation important to survival of species?
So they can develop the ability to fight new disease and the entire population won’t be wiped out by one disease.
They can adapt to new environments.
What are some gene controlled features in humans?
tounge rolling
hitch hikers thumb
What is the sex chromosome makeup of human?
Male: XY
Female: XX
Define: Phenotype
the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment (THE LETTER THING)
Define: Genotype
the genetic constitution of an individual organism
