Chemical Change Flashcards
What is meant by physical change?
Change of state. Eg. Solid->Liquid->Gas
What is meant by phase change?
Type of change that object is making
What are the names of six possible phase changes?
Sublimation Evaporation Melting Freezing Condensation Deposition
What is a reactant?
Reacts with another thing to form a product.
What is a product?
The thing created by a chemical reaction.
What is thermal decomposition?
Breaking down of a chemical compound into its elements.
What is the general equation for combustion reactions?
Fuel + O2 -> CO2 + H20
What is rusting?
The metal pulls in the oxygen molecules in the air and forms a brown/black layer on the surface.
Formula for sulfuric acid.
H2SO4
Formula for nitric acid
HNO3
Formula for hydrochloric acid
HCl
What is the general equation for an acid reacting with a metal?
Metal + Acid -> Metal Salt + Hydrogen
How is the reactivity series ordered?
The lower the group and period, the more reactive.
What is a base?
The oxide or hydroxide of a metal.
What is an alkali?
A base that is soluble in water, (Usually contains OH-)
What is the general neutralization equation?
Acid + Base -> Salt + Water
What is soluble?
- All group 1 metal compounds
- All nitrates
- All sulphates except lead, calcium, barium or strontium.
- All chlorides, bromides, and iodides except lead, mercury, and silver.
- Chlorate (ClO3-), Perchlorate (ClO4-), and acetate (CH3COOH-) salts.
What is insoluble?
- All oxides and hydroxides, except group 1, or Barium, Strontium, or calcium.
- All carbonates except those of group 1 elements, or Ammonium (NH4)
- All compounds of lead except nitrate.
- All sulphides are insoluble except those of group 1 or 2 elements or, Ammonium (NH4)
