Genetics Flashcards
What is genetic drift?
stochastic changes in allele frequency due to chance
What is positive selection?
Alleles with advantageous phenotype increase in frequency
What is negative selection?
Alleles with deleterious effects decrease in frequency
What are the 2 points from the neutral theory of molecular evolution?
1- Variation and divergence within species chiefly result of neutral mutations.
2- genetic drift drives molecular evolution
What is the effect of population size on time taken for a neutral mutation to be fixed?
Larger population= longer for neutral mutation to be fixed
so higher genetic diversity
What does the spread of selfish genes generally depend on?
mating system for outcrossing
Why are suppressors not present fro small selfish gene driven deviations?
they are costly so only selected for when deviation is signifiant
Give 3 reasons sex ratio drivers are selected against/suppressed
1) lower sperm success of mutated X
2) Y doesn’t want to be eliminated = selection for suppression
3) female bias increases male success
