Genetic Variation Flashcards
How is genetic variation formed ?
This is through sexual reproduction, as chromosomes come from father and mother
In human body how many chromosomes determine sex ?
23 chromosomes
What does the sex is the chromosomes XX and XY ?
XX is the Female, XY is the Male
What is a Allele ?
This is different versions of same gene
What is a dominant allele ?
This is the version that only requires one chromosome to develop characteristics
What is a recessive allele ?
This the version that two chromosomes are needed to develop characteristics
What is a chromosome made of ?
This is large molecules/long chain of DNA
What is a gene ?
This is a small section of DNA
How is a specific protein made ?
Genes are coded for a particular combination of amino acids to make specific protein.
How are people identified using DNA?
Everybody has unique DNA, which can be use to identify people through DNA fingerprinting.
What is a Genotype
This means what alleles you have like the genotype of a allele is “bb” - This means its bb
What is a Phenotype
This is the actual characteristics of a gene.
What is Homozygous
This is when alleles are the same
What is heterozygous
This is when alleles are different
