Cell division and Inheritance Flashcards
Mendel Theory
The theory that characteristics are inherited by parents and passed on.
What is mitosis ?
This is the cell division of body cells
What is meiosis ?
This is the fusion of gamete cells after being divided.
What do chromosomes contain ?
They contain genetic information
What happens when a body cell divides by mitosis ?
Copies of genes are made forming x-shaped chromosomes, with the copies on both arms. Then the cells divide in the middle to form two genetically identical body cells.
When does mitosis occur
For growth and repair and replacement of cells,
How many sets do gamete cells have
One set of chromosomes
How many sets do body cells have?
Two sets of chromosomes
What happens in the reproductive system(Meiosis) ?
Cells from sex organs like the testes and ovaries divide to from gametes.
What happens in the process of meiosis ?
Copies of genetic information is made. Then the cell divides twice to form four gametes all with one set of chromosomes.
When gametes fertilise, what happens
A single body micro organism is made which then develops by repeatedly going through mitosis.
When Talking about differentiation whats the difference between a plant and animal cell
Plant cells retain the ability to differentiate throughout life, whereas animal cells once mature, cell division is restricted to growth and repair.
Where can stem cells be collected from?
The bone marrow and human embryos
What is a stem cell
This is a cell with the ability to differentiate into other cells.
What can stem cells be used for?
They can be used to cure paralysis.
