Genetic Predisposition
1) Why are some people predisposed (most likely) to develop some conditions?
2) How can you get prediabetes?
1) Some people are predisposed to develop conditions because of their genetic make-up (DNA); meaning due to the genes they have inherited from their parents.
2) If you have a family history of diabetes, then you are likely to have prediabetes and develop it.
Ill Health
1) What is ill health?
2) How is ill health catorgorised?
1) Ill health is a physical factor that can have a positive and negative effect on health and wellbeing.
2) It’s catorgorised as acute or chronic.

1) Define acute ill health.
2) Define chronic ill health.
3) Give examples of both.
1) Comes on quickly; it’s **short term **and can be cured.
e.g flu, broken bones, asthma attacks.
2) Comes on gradually (takes more than 3 months); it’s long term but can’t be cured.
e.g asthma, cancer, cystic fibrosis

Describe mental ill health
Mental ill health describes our emotional, psychological and social well being.
Mental ill health
Give examples of emotional, psychological and social well being.
Emotional: feeling content and satisfied with life, having the ability to manage and regulate emotions effectively.
Psychological: having positive self-image, high self-esteem, having sense of purpose and meaning in life.
Social: having a strong support of friends and family, engaging in positive and fulfilling relationships with others.

1) How does stress happen?
2) Which hormone is caused to be secreted?
3) What happens if it’s experienced for a long time?
1) Stress happens when you have to respond to demands of pressures put upon you.
2) It causes the body to secrete adrenaline that helps you to respond to what’s happening (fight or flight response).
3) It becomes a problem if it’s very intense and experienced over a long time.
Mental ill health
List the short and long term effects of stress.
Short term:
* increased heart rate and blood pressure
* feeling irritated or overwhelmed
* trouble sleeping
* changes in appetite
Long term:
* can cause chronic diseases that weaken the immune system
* prolonged stress leads to anxiety and depression
* leads to physical issues like cardiovascular diseases.
Physical abilities
1) What are physical abilities?
2) How can they affect?
3) Disability doesn’t mean the person can’t do everyday tasks, they just need more time, support and equpiment. What does it affect in the body? (in terms of body system)
1) Physical abilities is how well your body can perform the physical actions.
2) It can be affected temporarily (after injury or operation) or permanently (inherited condition).
3) It affects
* ability to stand or walk
* balance
* stamina
* strength
* flexibility
Physical abilities
What adaptations should be made to reduce the impact if the person is affected by their environment?
- Changes to the layout or furniture; to provide them with more space
- Adding lifts; for individuals with mobility impairment
- Using special devices or equipment; to provide them with sense of independency that have sensory impairments.
- Raising awareness around the area or on social media; to provide a supportive environment such as teaching of disability.
Physical abilities
List the factors that cause visual and hearing loss.
- illnesses; diabetes
- inherited conditions
- injuries or infections
- age-related conditions
- environment induced; prolonged exposure to loud noises leads to hearing loss over time, living in a high polluted area leads to visual impairment
How does sensory impairment impacts an individual’s PIES?
Physical: not being able to do physical activities on their own, limits their mobility levels,
Intellectual: slow in retaining information which hinders learning,
Emotional: feelings of frustration, anxiety, burden, low self-esteem, inability to cope with emotions effectively
Social: lack of confidence while interacting with other, hinders themselves from social activities
