Environmental factors / Impacts of Life Events Flashcards
1) What are environmental factors?
2) What is pollution?
1) Environmental factors refer to the air, water and land in the area.
2) Pollution is a harmful substance (or irritants) that cause damage to the living organisms in the environment.
1) What is air pollution?

1) Air pollution is the mixture of gases and particles that are emitted into the atmosphere by humans.
2) Air pollution is caused by:
* burning fossil fuels
* manufacturing activities in factories
* vehicle emmissions
* agricultural activities
1) How does air pollution impacts a person’s body?
2) Which people are affected by air pollution the most?
1) It can:
* aggravate respiratory system
* cause irritate eyes, nose, and throat
* affect people with asthma / emphysema.
2) People who live near busy roads, airports or in inudstrial areas are most affected by air pollution.
aggravate: worse or serious
1) What is bronchitis?
2) How does it affect the body?
1) It’s an inflammation of the airways in the lungs, caused by an infections due to inhaling tobacco smoke, fumes or polluted air.
2) It leads to:
* inability to walk long distances,
* sore throat,
* low grade fever,
* shortness of breat.
1) What is water pollution?
2) What causes water pollution?
1) Water pollution is the contamination of the water bodies suchas lakes, rivers, seas and underground water by harmful substances.
2) It’s caused by:
* sewage
* wasting water
* leakages from underground storage
* chemicals and industrial waste going into lakes and rivers
Impacts of water pollution / unclean water on PIES.
Physical: makes us ill which limits u sfrom doing physical activities
Intellectual: hinders learning due to not being able to focus, difficulty in learning skills if unwell
Emotional: makes us feel low, feel self-concious and worrying about future
Social: stops us from getting out and socialising with people as you feel insecure.

2) It causes more problem in the inner cities, deprived areas (from loud music, road works).
List the impacts of noise pollution on PIES

Intellectual: unable to concentrate, missing school/work, low memory
Emotional: lower self-esteem, frustrated, feeling anxious and scared
Social: not wanting to go out, not able to socialise effectively due to too much noise
How are the following pollutions caused:
* Outdoor air pollution
* Indoor air pollution
* Land contamination
* Food pollutants
* Light pollution
- Outdoor air pollution = caused by chemicals from factories and agricultural activities
- Indoor air pollution = caused by cigaratte smoking indoor, mould pores, aerosols
- Land contamination = caused by landfill, intensive farming
- Food pollutants = caused by pesticides and fertilisers
- Light pollution = caused by street lights
Health and wellbeing is also affected by the type of house you live in.
List the good and bad living conditions.
Good living conditions:
* home located in a quiet and safe area
* house in less polluted area
* spacious house
* warm and dry
* near and safe outdoor places
Bad living conditions:
* damp and mouldy environment
* a lot of pollution around the area
* less spacious
* Unsafe
Which health problems do the following house conditions can cause:
* damp and mould pores
* overcrowding
* no open space
* poor heating
- Damp and mould pores; leads to respiratory problems such as asthma
- Overcrowding; leads to anxiety and depression, difficulty in concentrating, sleep deprived, pressure on relationships which causes conflicts
- No open space; leads to less physically fit due to lack of exercise and physical play, starts to feel captured
- Poor/less heating; leads to poor health, heart disease. no motivation to do anything
Describe the how it’s like to live in an urban and a rural area.
Urban - cities and towns
Rural - countryside
Urban area:
* better transport
* close to facilities (shops)
* social events’close to services
* pollution
* you might feel isolated
